Can you add colour to a hot-foiled image? Yes, you can! 🦋✨
Today I’m sharing a pink and purple butterfly card made with the Butterfly Flight Hot Foil Dies. The butterflies have beautiful gold outlines, and I added colour using the coordinating masks and ink blending.
This card came together while I was experimenting with the hot foil system. I love those sessions where someone asks, “What happens if you try this?” and we get to find out together!
Gold foil and colourful butterflies
The Butterfly Flight design gives you a collection of butterflies in different shapes and sizes. I used gold foil for the outlines, then brought in soft pink and purple tones to add colour to the wings.
The metallic lines stand out beautifully against the colour. You can keep the shading light or build up the ink for a stronger look, depending on the effect you prefer.
On this card, the largest butterfly sits in the centre, with the smaller ones arranged around it. The different sizes create a lovely sense of movement across the card.
TIP: Add colour with coordinating masks
Coordinating masks make it easier to add colour to the butterfly shapes. Line up the mask with the foiled design, then gently apply ink through the openings.
Start with a light layer of ink and build the colour gradually. You can add more where you want extra depth, while leaving other areas softer.
During the session, I tried Pretty in Pink and a purple tone. Once you’re comfortable with the technique, have a play with your own favourite colour combinations. You could even make a collection of butterflies and use them across several cards.
A textured background that lets the butterflies shine
I added the butterflies to a white embossed panel. The texture gives the background interest while keeping it light enough for the colourful butterflies to stand out.
The pink border frames the panel, and a little subtle stamped texture around the edges adds another detail. Some of the butterfly wings are lifted slightly, giving the arrangement dimension.
When arranging several pieces on a card, try placing them all before reaching for your adhesive. Move them around until you’re happy with the balance and have room for your sentiment.
A little reminder: you are loved
I finished the card with a “You are loved” sentiment on a pink banner. A few tiny butterfly embellishments repeat the theme without taking attention away from the larger butterflies.
It’s a lovely message to send to someone who could use a little encouragement. Imagine opening your letterbox and finding this reminder inside! 💕
Try it with your favourite colours
This design is easy to adapt. Choose your favourite foil, blend colours onto your butterflies and arrange them over a light background. You could create a soft look with pastel inks or try stronger colours for a different effect.
If you’re new to hot foiling, take your time and follow the instructions for your system. Keep a spare piece of cardstock nearby for practising while you get familiar with the technique.
