Can we talk about that paper for a moment?

It’s definitely the star of this card, and the best bit is that I really didn’t need to do much to it. The beautiful floral design gave me the colour palette and most of the detail before I’d even started adding anything else.

This is the sort of card I enjoy putting together when I want the supplies to do the hard work. Rather than covering up that gorgeous Velvet Meadow Specialty Designer Series Paper, I kept the extra elements fairly simple and picked up colours that were already in the design.

Letting the Velvet Meadow paper do the work

I started with a Peaceful Pine card base and added a layer of Berry Burst. That narrow border of Berry Burst brings out the brighter pink flowers in the Designer Series Paper and gives the patterned layer a lovely frame.

Then came the Velvet Meadow Specialty Designer Series Paper. With so much floral detail already happening on the card front, there really wasn’t any need to add lots of extra layers.

That’s one of the things I like about using a detailed piece of Designer Series Paper as the main feature of a card. You can take your colour cues straight from the paper and then choose just one or two smaller elements to add some dimension.

Adding the die-cut flower

For my main embellishment, I cut one of the flowers from Basic White cardstock using the Flowering Meadow Dies.

I then coloured the die-cut with Stampin’ Blends, using Peaceful Pine for the stem and leaves, Berry Burst for the flower petals and Daffodil Delight for the centre.

Because those colours are already found throughout the patterned paper, the flower fits into the design without competing with everything happening in the background.

A simple Thanks sentiment

I kept the sentiment just as straightforward.

I cut a strip of Basic White cardstock and stamped “Thanks” in Peaceful Pine. The white strip gives the eye somewhere to rest among all those flowers while still keeping the sentiment easy to see.

I adhered both the sentiment strip and the coloured flower with Stampin’ Dimensionals to lift them slightly from the card front.

Finally, I added three Dreamy Flowers adhesive embellishments. They were a small finishing touch, but they added another little bit of detail without making the card feel too busy.

And that was it.

This Velvet Meadow Suite card is a good example of just how simple a design can be when you start with patterned paper that already has plenty of colour and interest.

A coordinating card base and layer, one die-cut flower, a straightforward sentiment and a few embellishments were really all it needed.

If you have a piece of Designer Series Paper that you’ve been reluctant to cut because you love the pattern, try giving it most of the card front and letting it be the feature. Sometimes the simplest way to use beautiful paper is simply to let people see it.
