Velvet Meadow Floral Card with Layered Texture

Sometimes a beautiful piece of Designer Series Paper really doesn’t need much help.

That was very much the case with this card. I wanted the floral paper to do most of the work, so I kept the rest of the design fairly simple and concentrated on adding texture and a few small details around it.

Floral card featuring Velvet Meadow Specialty Designer Series Paper, Cloud Cover cardstock and a white heat-embossed sentiment

Starting with layers of Cloud Cover

I began with a Cloud Cover card base and added another layer of Cloud Cover cardstock over the top.

Before attaching that layer, I ran it through the Forever Plaid 3D Embossing Folder. Instead of placing the cardstock into the folder so the plaid pattern was perfectly straight, I put it in on a slight angle.

It’s only a small change, but I really like what it does to the background. The angled pattern adds interest without becoming too busy or taking attention away from the floral paper.

Letting the Velvet Meadow paper shine

The main feature of the card is a piece of Velvet Meadow Specialty Designer Series Paper.

This collection has some gorgeous floral designs, but what makes it particularly interesting is the extra texture. Selected sheets include soft flocked details, so this is definitely one of those papers that is even nicer when you can actually pick it up and feel it.

I added the floral panel over the embossed Cloud Cover layer, leaving some of that textured cardstock visible down the side.

The combination gives the card plenty of detail without needing lots of extra elements.

A simple heat-embossed sentiment

For the sentiment, I used the Flowering Meadow Stamp Set.

I stamped the greeting in Versamark ink, covered it with white embossing powder and then heat set it with my heat tool. White embossing on Cloud Cover gives a lovely soft contrast while still standing out clearly against the cardstock.

I cut the sentiment out using a die from the Bordered in Beauty Dies and attached it to the card front with Stampin’ Dimensionals.

Raising the sentiment slightly helps separate it from the patterned paper and gives the card another little bit of dimension.

The finishing touches

To finish the card, I scattered a few white Dreamy Flowers across the front.

I didn’t want to add too much, because there is already plenty happening in the floral paper and embossed background. The small white flowers were just enough to tie in with the white heat embossing and add a little extra texture.

I really like how this one came together. The Cloud Cover keeps everything soft, the Velvet Meadow paper brings in that lovely burst of colour, and turning the embossing folder slightly off-centre adds just enough unexpected detail.

It’s also a good reminder that when you have patterned paper you really love, you don’t need to cover it up. A textured background, a simple sentiment and a few embellishments can be all it needs.
